The purpose of wiki page is to provide all the necessary information for individuals seeking certification and training steps. It distinguishes between two distinct aspects: using the CNC (Computer Numerical Controlle) Router and designing for the CNC Router. These two areas require different curricula and efforts. For this reason, we are changing our instructional approach.

Our goal is to streamline the certification process by leveraging existing content. We want to guide people effectively as they begin their CNC Router journey. We are leveraging the content that Vectric (the makers of VCarve Pro) are creating by recommending specific videos that apply to achieving certification. We will be adding videos for additional information that applies specifically to MakerFX Makerspace.

Based on recent maintenance findings, we are reverting to a one-on-one certification process. To schedule a certification attempt, you must submit a file that you plan to cut. The file should fit on a 12" x 12" piece of pine, with a thickness of 3/4 inch, and be cuttable in under five minutes. Once the file is submitted, a certification time will be determined. The intent is to have the file reviewed before certification to spot any challenges in the design and toolpaths.

The purpose of the certification process is not to make you a CNC Router expert, but to ensure you can operate the CNC Router safely and successfully.

Being certified does not require memorization of the steps. The testing process is open everything. Detailed instructions on starting up, stopping, and cleaning up the CNC are available on the wiki. No need to memorize these steps; simply refer to the documentation when needed. The limiting factor is that the certification process is time limited to needing to be completed in under an hour.
As the amount of tutorials can be quite overwhelming, the list below will provide a good starting point and provide the knowledge you need for the certification. A basic sign might not be what you are wanting to make, it provides a good idea of what is available in the software. The certification file is basically a simple sign.

This page attempts to collect commonly asked questions and their answers into one place. It also includes unasked questions that should be asked to hopefully provide insight into the process.

Why does my design have such a long cut time?
+ Caption text
The most common reason for this issue is not using the proper bit or bit settings. By default VCarvePro starts with very shallow cuts with the "default". You can see in the pictures how to quickly determine if this is the case. First look at the name of the cutting tool. Does it have a name or just a generic name? If it has a generic name, that means that a bit has been taken from the basic system. Typically bit names will have manufacturer and model number. Check out the House Bit page for more information about what bits MakerFx has that you can use.
|
Another way to tell is if the number of passes is higher than expected. Most of the bits MakerFX has as house bits can cut 3/8" or 1/4" per pass. That means cutting through a 1 inch think material should be done in four passes or less. Having a number such as ten, means that the pass depth might be lower than expected.
|

When is the next certification scheduled for?
We have changed our certification process. The complete information is at the CNC Router Training & Certification page in the wiki. The basic overview, is you obtain a license for VCarvePro, study on your own to create a test file, submit the test file when you request a time on the scheduling form.

What are the key items to pay attention to when preparing for certification?
That is quite a wise question. The purpose of certification is to keep you and the equipment safe. Here are some common stumbling points

* Not submitting the file with enough time for the examiner to review and you to make changes.
* Not reading messages on the screen
* Not referring back to either printed documentation or this wiki
* Not using the MakerFX house bits or bits you own
* Remembering that there is a time limit. One is limited to one hour, too much discussion means not enough time to work
* The design does not need to be complicated
** The certification file is designed to show the most common tool paths being used and how to create them
** Literally it could be a circle
** The certification file is designed to insure that you know how to create cutting or tooling paths, not that you are an amazing designer
* We do not try to fail people, we want to make sure you are safe and using the tools properly
* It is open book, open Internet, use Slack ... etc.

From experience we recommend not relying on the certification examiner exclusively. We have found that too much help from the proctor results in frustration during the first solo cut. We want you to succeed and have fun. Asking questions is encouraged, especially on Slack. (That is where the questions come from.)

What is the certification process?
The purpose of the certification is to make sure you are knowledgable in how to operate the CNC equipment safely. Most importantly for you, secondarily for the machine. It is a multistep process.
* Go to https://makerfx.softr.app/ and "Request a VCarve 12 License
* The CNC Router team will verify that you are a member and then intive you into the organization to allow you to use our license
* Watch the over view video explaining the certification file
* Watch tutorials on the Vectric YouTube Channel
* Create your certification file
* Submit your file for review at https://makerfx.softr.app/certification-signupe
* The instructors will review the file, and if there are issues will send you notes. If the file is good, you will be sent a link to schedule a time
The most common reason for this issue is not using the proper bit or bit settings.
|

So you want to know about the CNC Router, you have come to the right page.

tl;dr If you want to sign up for Certification or request to be added to the MakerFX license, click this link https://makerfx.softr.app

What is the certification process?
The purpose of the certification is to make sure you are knowledgable in how to operate the CNC equipment safely. Most importantly for you, secondarily for the machine. It is a multistep process.
* Go to https://makerfx.softr.app/ and "Request a VCarve 12 License
* Create your certification file (the https://wiki.makerfx.org/CNC_Router_FAQ has a list of items to be aware of)
* Submit your file for review at https://makerfx.softr.app/certification-signupe
* The instructors will review the file, and if there are issues will send you notes. If the file is good, you will be sent a link to schedule a time
Vectric Getting Started Videos
Vectric is the company that publishes the VCarve Pro software that we use. Below is a list of videos that provide a good basic start to using their software and CNC in general. As the amount of tutorials can be quite overwhelming, the list below will provide a good starting point and provide the knowledge you need for the certification. A basic sign might not be what you are wanting to make, it provides a good idea of what is available in the software. The certification file is basically a simple sign. Proper selecting the right bits or tools is an important part of using the machine effectively.
Quick Run through of Creating the VCarve Pro Design File
This video is a quick, approximately 17 minutes, recording of the steps needed to create the certification file. One does not need to do everything, it could simply be a circle for the certification test. The reason this file has more settings is to provide more opportunities to see what VCarve can do. More supplementary information will be created and released as time permits.
Bits and End Mills
MakerFX provides a basic selection of Bits and End Mills, courtesy of Bits and Bits. Not every use case is supported, so for specific needs it is recommended to purchase and use your own tooling. This allows you to select the exact tools to meet your needs. Bits and Bits is a great resource for determining the bits you might need. In the Slack #mfx-cnc-router channel is a pinned note with a discount code for 10% off and free shipping.

|
|

* Create your certification file
* Submit your file for review at https://makerfx.softr.app/certification-signupe
* The instructors will review the file, and if there are issues will send you notes. If the file is good, you will be sent a link to schedule a time

How much does it cost to get certified?
Our members volunteer to teach and certify people to use the CNC. There is no cost for their time or the use of the machine. We do ask that you bring a small piece of wood or MDF to learn on.
If I am certified at another location, is it transferable?
The certification process is still required, but taking of the VCarve class is not required. The reason is that each location and machine has slight differences.
Where can I purchase material for use on the CNC?
What is the difference between and up cut and downcut bit
What are the dimensions of the Forest CNC?
Do I have to draw everything in VCarve Pro?
May I leave material at the space?
NO!
How do I reserve the CNC?
How do I know how long to reserve the CNC for?
|

* Not refering back to either printed documentation or this wiki
* Not loading in the MakerFX house bits

This page attempts to collect commonly asked questions and their answers into one place. It also includes unasked questions that should be asked to hopefully provide insight into the process.

Why is my design have such a long cut time?
|
|

* Not refering back to either printed documentation or this wiki
* Not loading in the MakerFX house bits

* MakerFX provides a basic selection of Bits and End Mills. It is recommended to purchase and use your own tooling. This allows you to select the exact tools to meet your needs.
* Certification is the process where a user is observed using the CNC Router to verify that they will not damage themselves, others, or the machinery. The process is designed for the student to show that preparation, clean up, and operation are understood. It is possible to be certified without taking the in person MakerFX training.
* Training is basic instruction for creating a simple file, loading files, preparing the machine for use, and proper operation including cleanup.
The release of VCarve Pro 12.0 brings significant changes to the interface, simplifying various aspects. As a result, we’re transitioning to a self-led training process. This training encompasses both design and operation, including a dedicated page on the MakerFX wiki called “CNC Router Training & Certification”.

Overview
Operating the X-Carve requires both setting up the hardware and preparing your design files for the X-Carve. This page is divided into two main parts:
* Preparing your Design
** Design a file
** Use VCarve to create GCode
* Machine Setup
** Powering up the machine
** Load Material
** Load Tool
** Setup / Calibrate Machine
** Final Checks
** Start the Project

Preparing your Design
There are many different ways to get your design ready for carving on the X-Carve CNC. Some of the common tools that can be used for designing include:
* Adobe Illustrator
* Inkscape
* Fusion 360
* VCarve
* and more...

The goal of design prep is to take a drawing / design and convert it to machine readable commands called G-Code. This Wiki will show you how to open an existing VCarve file to prepare it for milling by creating the G-Code that will be used to control the CNC. For a brief overview of creating a very simple design using V-Carve, you can click here or view one of the several videos on YouTube on using VCarve.
Before use, each person must be certified and approved for use. The process for becoming certified is separate from the training. If one is already familiar with using VCarve to convert designs into tool paths, the training is not required. The training can be taken in person or as on demand online modules. The training is designed to give you enough knowledge to create a simple design to be used during the certification process. If you do not take the class, you will find the information to create the certification file on the training and certification page. There is much more to know about using the CNC router and designing files than is covered in the MakerFX training. On the training page you will find links to additional resources.
Note
* MakerFX provides a basic selection of Bits and End Mills. It is recommended to purchase and use your own tooling. This allows you to select the exact tools to meet your needs.
* Certification is the process where a user is observed using the CNC Router to verify that they will not damage themselves, others, or the machinery. The process is designed for the student to show that preparation, clean up, and operation are understood. It is possible to be certified without taking the in person MakerFX training.
* Training is basic instruction for creating a simple file, loading files, preparing the machine for use, and proper operation including cleanup.
